Freedom is Not Free

I’m sure you’ve read the words in my subject line before but they are important words. As we celebrate another Independence Day, it is surely a time to think on these words. So many lives have been surrendered for Americans to continue to claim the freedoms we hold dear. The costs to so many families across the generations implores our gratitude, respect, and remembrance. Our flag of freedom still waves today because God has blessed America greatly. The price of the freedoms we yet enjoy in America that are not enjoyed by many in the world has been paid by many brave patriots. […]

We Need GOD!

Since I last posted here, we’ve seen the horror of another mass school shooting and also seen the departure of a truly impactful person, the evangelist Billy Graham. Such events stop us all in our tracks to ponder the importance of life and what we value most. […]

Being Secure in a World that Lacks Security

I hope you are well this Saturday, friends.

I surely don’t need to offer a laundry list of online links to persuade anyone of the uncertainties that surround us all today. We live in such uncertain days. I’m thankful the Lord God is a refuge of spiritual rest and calm to whom one can turn amid the storms of life. […]

Just What is Stewardship?

If we look to Webster for the meaning of stewardship, we find the following words:

“the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially :  the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care” […]

Giving Thanks

Dear friends,

I pray that each of you has a good Thanksgiving and thoroughly enjoy the company of loved ones. Every moment of life is a blessing from God. As we often say in church, “God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good.” […]

Money: A Christian Perspective

In a recent post, I shared a video that a dear friend had shared with me. The video highlighted a couple of valuable financial lessons from the Bible. As stated in the video, the Bible actually has much to say about money. […]

Genuine Security

I hope this post tonight finds each of you doing well. It seems hard to believe that summer has already passed and fall has come.

These are interesting economic times. For example, we are all witnessing a continuation of depressed pricing in the world of commodities. Is this primarily driven by hedge fund activity? Is this primarily driven by declining “real” world-wide demand? Is this somehow a result of the ultra-low interest rate environment and the accompanying flood of newly-printed money? Where are things headed, economically speaking, tomorrow, next year and for people of future generations? I believe such issues are certainly worthy of consideration but while we can speculate, we have no hard answers for such questions and we all need a sense of complete security each and every day toward our futures. The uncertainty of day to day issues can beneficially serve to turn our attention toward God and what He has to say to us about real security. […]

Happy Birthday America

I wish a Happy 4th to all. If my math is correct, it has been 239 years since the Declaration of Independence, the time we officially declared our independence from Britain. Freedom is never free and should never be taken for granted.

God has surely blessed our land and its people. May we look to Him each day to keep us free and grant us wisdom.

Again, I wish you a happy 4th of July as we pause to remember our nation’s heritage.

God’s Priceless Wisdom

In the following scriptures, God describes the infinite worth of His wisdom. It makes clear that neither silver nor hidden treasure can compare to the value of His wisdom. And it is His wisdom that permits a proper perspective toward everything during our earthly pilgrimage, including money and investing. […]

Inspiring NBC Interview

Today, I’ll deviate from any discussion of stock investments or financial talk. Last night, my wife and I watched an NBC News Special, “Saving Dr. Brantly.” In this program, Matt Lauer interviewed Dr. Kent Brantly, a Christian medical missionary serving in Liberia. It was truly an inspiring story of the personal battle recently faced by Dr. Brantly as he contracted the deadly Ebola virus while serving those sickened by Ebola in Liberia and yet eventually recovered.

As I sat down to write my post, I was moved to delay what I would otherwise share today in favor of providing the link to the interview. My wife and I found the story tremendously encouraging. If you have not seen it, I believe you will find it well worth the time it takes to watch. Note that the entire interview is in six parts, ranging from about 5 minutes to over 7 minutes per part. So, you can watch it incrementally if you don’t have the 40 minutes or so to see it all at once. Next week, I’ll return to some more stock talk.
